The uncertainty of the future makes it difficult to move forward. How can I plan anything in these uncertain times?

I don’t normally dive into the political in this blog, but with everything going on, I feel I must. Now is not the time to be making hopeful updates about my upcoming novels, or offer sage advice on writing or self-publishing. No, now is the time to sound the alarm and make preparations. Whether those preparations include fighting back and standing our ground, or fleeing for our lives, hoping to live and fight another day.

While I have a certain amount of privilege, being white, perceived as male, living in a Blue state, and with a roof over my head, I still have several targets on my back. I am a transgender man, and am facing the possibility of losing access to transgender healthcare in the future. Because my books don’t make me much income (forcing me to live off my retirement savings), I also qualify for Medicaid, which they may soon take away. I’m also an atheist, and I’m sure that wouldn’t sit right with the administration’s new focus on anti-Christian sentiment. Last, but not least, they may be coming for anyone who writes what they deem to be pornography, which could include any kind of queer content.

It hasn’t gotten that far yet, but Project 2025 details all of those things as potential policies. Considering how much of that playbook they’ve already used, it’s only a matter of time before they mandate even more restrictive executive orders. If that comes to pass, I may need to grab my passport and leave my home in Colorado. I moved out here in 1996 with a heart full of hope and a head full of dreams. If I have to leave, it will be with a much heavier heart.

If it weren’t for my dogs, I would probably have already left. However, my older dog, Lexi is almost fifteen and is a showing signs of extreme old age. I can’t bear to just abandon her unless I absolutely have to. The younger one, Bailey, is only six and he might be able to join me once I figure out accommodations wherever I end up.

In the meantime, I’m doing my best to not wallow too much, and am slowly chipping away at all my various projects. If I’m lucky, I still hope to publish two books this year. The long awaited second book in my sci-fi series, The Medellan Conspiracy, and an omegaverse novella that I’m reworking from the last, and final, Kindle Vella story I ever posted.

So, regardless of all the uncertainty, stay tuned. I’ll continue to post updates here, regardless of what happens. For more immediate updates on what I’m doing, feel free to follow me on Threads or BlueSky.

Reflecting on 2024

As another year comes to a close, it’s time for me to reflect on 2024. Progress (and the lack thereof) on “The Medellan Conspiracy” At the start of the year, I had planned to finish the rewrite of the second novel in my sci-fi series, The Medellan Conspiracy. Unfortunately, because […]
